Internship - Dateline NBC (Summer, Fall and Spring, Rolling Deadline)

Dateline, the award-winning primetime NBC newsmagazine, produces a wide range of programs - from investigative reports to crime stories to breaking news - and offers a valuable opportunity to learn about network news and documentary production for interns interested in pursuing a career in journalism. Dateline's Burbank bureau consists of correspondents, producers, associate producers and editors who typically work Monday-Friday, both on-site and in the field, as well as occasional weekends. Under the supervision of Dateline producers, interns are able to participate in nearly every stage of production of a nationally-broadcast newsmagazine program.

Dateline interns will have the opportunity to work directly with producers, assisting with and learning about many elements of story production. Responsibilities include project research, reviewing and logging videotape, organizing production notebooks, as well as finding archival footage and photographs, tracking down court documents, locating individuals and experts and fact-checking. There is also some light clerical work, as needed. When opportunities arise, interns will also be able to observe field shoots and edit sessions, providing a chance to ask questions and broaden their production and editorial knowledge. Interns are also encouraged to pitch potential stories to Dateline senior staff, which will give them the ability to develop and exhibit their writing and story outlining skills.

Specific skills required to work at Dateline include:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Internet research (knowledge of iNews, Nexis, Factiva preferred)
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments while maintaining attention to detail
  • Comfortable working independently in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism
In order to be eligible for this unpaid internship, you should be:
  • A graduate student or an undergraduate who has completed at least two years of school
  • Receiving academic credit for your internship (you will be asked to provide a letter from your school).
  • Available to work a minimum of 16 hours per week during normal business hours (Mon - Fri between 9:30am and 5:30pm) for a minimum of 12 weeks during the semester

If you meet all of the above requirements, please send a cover letter (including the days you are available and the time of year you're interested in), resume, and a 1-2 page editorial and production critique of one of our shows to Luz Villarreal via e-mail at luz.villarreal@nbcuni.com and Jennifer Hoffman at jennifer.hoffman@nbcuni.com. You can watch our program on TV or on the web by going to msnbc.com and clicking on the Dateline tab.
